7 Days to Die has one of the most active modding scenes in the survival genre. The game’s XML-based modding system makes it accessible for smaller modlets, while overhaul mods completely transform the experience into something that feels like a different game.
This guide focuses on server mods - the ones that change the multiplayer experience. We’ll cover the major overhaul mods, useful modlets, and the practical details of running a modded 7DTD server.
Before You Start: EAC and Crossplay
One non-negotiable rule for modded 7DTD servers:
EAC (Easy Anti-Cheat) must be disabled for mods to work.
This means crossplay is off. Console players (PS5, Xbox) cannot join a modded server. If your group includes console players, mods aren’t an option - see our crossplay guide for that path instead.
To disable EAC on WinterNode, edit serverconfig.xml via File Manager or SFTP and set EACEnabled to false, then restart the server.
Overhaul Mods: The Big Ones
Overhaul mods are total conversions that replace or expand core game systems. They add new enemies, items, progression paths, world generation, and mechanics. You can only run one overhaul mod at a time - they’re not compatible with each other.
Darkness Falls
Status: NOT compatible with V2.x as of early 2026
Darkness Falls is the most well-known 7DTD overhaul. It adds a class system, tiered progression, demon enemies, custom world generation with unique POIs, and a difficulty curve that makes vanilla feel gentle.
The mod is currently paused for V2.x compatibility. Developer KhaineGB has stated that the V1 update took roughly a year to complete, and a V2 port is not expected in the near term. The mod is still playable by running 7DTD on an older game version (V1.x through Steam’s beta branches).
If you want to play Darkness Falls now: You’ll need to downgrade your game version. On WinterNode, contact support to set your server to the appropriate legacy version. All players must also run the same version on their clients.
| Detail | Value |
|---|---|
| Minimum RAM | 8 GB (10 GB recommended) |
| EAC | Disabled |
| Crossplay | No |
| Custom world gen | Yes (15-30+ min first generation) |
| Client install required | Yes |
For installation details, see our Darkness Falls installation guide.
Age of Oblivion
Status: Active and compatible with V2.x
Age of Oblivion is one of the newer overhaul mods and has grown rapidly in popularity. It started as an expansion of the Farm Life mod and evolved into a full overhaul with new enemy tiers, vehicles, workstations, weapons, missions, crops, and an endgame questline.
What sets it apart is the farming and creature system. You can raise animals, grow a wider variety of crops, and encounter entirely new enemy types that scale in difficulty. The endgame is significantly longer and harder than vanilla.

Rebirth
Status: Active and compatible with V2.x
Rebirth introduces a misery system that scales zombie difficulty as you level up, combined with ten character classes, custom traders, unique POIs, and a scenario system. The difficulty curve is dynamic - the world gets harder as you get stronger, which solves the mid-game power plateau that vanilla 7DTD has.
Each class has a full skill tree that affects how you approach the game. A farmer class plays very differently from a soldier class. This gives Rebirth strong replay value for groups that want to run multiple playthroughs.

War of the Walkers
Status: Check the mod’s official page for V2.x compatibility status
War of the Walkers is one of the oldest overhaul mods, known for its class system, expanded NPCs, over 1,000 new items, and RPG-style progression. It’s a more traditional take on the overhaul - less radical than Darkness Falls, but deeper than vanilla.
The mod has been through many iterations and has a dedicated community. Check the mod’s Nexus or forums page for the latest compatibility information, as the developer has historically updated for major game versions.

| EAC | Disabled |
| Crossplay | No |
| Custom world gen | Varies by version |

Overhaul Mod Choice
If you want a V2.x-compatible overhaul right now, Age of Oblivion and Rebirth are your best options. If Darkness Falls is a must-have, you’ll need to run an older game version until the V2 port is released.
Modlets: Smaller Mods, Big Impact
Modlets are lightweight mods that use 7DTD’s XML patching system. They don’t replace core files - they patch on top of them, which makes them easier to install, update, and stack together. Most modlets are compatible with each other and can even run alongside overhaul mods (check compatibility first).
Quality of Life
| Modlet | What it does |
|---|---|
| Bigger Backpack | Expands inventory slots (various sizes available) |
| Lockable Inventory Slots | Prevent specific slots from being dropped on death |
| Better Vehicle Storage | Increases vehicle inventory capacity |
| Custom Zombie Loot | Adjusts what zombies drop on death |
Gameplay Tweaks
| Modlet | What it does |
|---|---|
| Extended Farming | Adds more crops, recipes, and farming mechanics |
| Working Ovens/Sinks | Makes decorative kitchen items functional |
| Custom Horde Spawns | Control which zombie types appear during blood moons |
| Stack Size Increase | Raises stack limits for items and resources |
Server Management
| Modlet | What it does |
|---|---|
| Server Tools | Admin utilities - flying, teleporting, player management |
| CSMM Patrons Mod | Integrates with CSMM server management tool |
| Allocs Server Fixes | Web map, API endpoints, server management |
The best places to find modlets are 7daystodiemods.com and the Nexus Mods 7DTD page.
How Mod Installation Works
The basic process for any 7DTD mod:
- Create a
Modsfolder in your server’s root directory (if it doesn’t already exist) - Download the mod and extract it
- Look for the folder containing
ModInfo.xml- that’s the mod’s root folder - Upload that folder into
Mods/ - Disable EAC in serverconfig.xml
- Restart the server
For modlets, XML-based changes are pushed from the server to connecting clients automatically. Custom assets (icons, models, textures) must be installed on each player’s client separately.
For overhaul mods, both the server and all clients need the full mod installed. There’s no auto-push for overhaul mods.
Our mod installation guide walks through the full process on WinterNode.
Large File Uploads
Overhaul mods can be several hundred MB or more. For files larger than 100MB, use SFTP rather than the File Manager for faster, more reliable uploads.
Server Requirements for Modded Play
Modded servers need more resources than vanilla. Here’s a rough guide:
| Mod type | Minimum RAM | Recommended RAM |
|---|---|---|
| A few modlets | 6 GB | 6-8 GB |
| Many modlets (10+) | 6-8 GB | 8 GB |
| Overhaul mod | 8 GB | 10-12 GB |
| Overhaul + modlets | 10 GB | 12 GB |
Overhaul mods with custom world generation also need patience on first startup - initial world gen can take 15-30+ minutes depending on the mod and map size.
Getting Started with Mods
If you’re new to modded 7DTD, start with a few quality-of-life modlets before jumping into an overhaul. This lets you learn how mod installation and management works without committing to a full conversion.

Frequently Asked Questions
Not yet. As of early 2026, Darkness Falls does not have a V2.x compatible version. The developer (KhaineGB) has stated that the V1 update took about a year, and a V2 update is not expected in the near term. You can still play Darkness Falls by running an older game version.
No. Mods require EAC to be disabled, and crossplay requires EAC to be on. You have to choose one or the other. If any player in your group is on console, mods are off the table.
No. Overhaul mods replace core game systems and are not compatible with each other. Pick one overhaul mod per server. You can add modlets alongside an overhaul, but check compatibility first.
For modlets that only change XML data, the server pushes changes to clients automatically. For overhaul mods and anything with custom assets (models, textures, icons), players must install the same mod files on their client.
