Build 42 multiplayer landed in late 2025, and the modding scene has been catching up since. If you ran a modded Build 41 server, you already know the drill - major game updates break mods, and it takes time for authors to port their work forward. The good news is that a solid lineup of B42-compatible mods is available now, covering quality of life, vehicles, maps, and server management.
This guide focuses on mods that work with Build 42 multiplayer servers. Not singleplayer-only mods, not Build 41 holdovers that might sort of work. Server-tested, multiplayer-confirmed mods that are worth running today.
Warning
Build 42 is still on the unstable branch and receives frequent patches. A mod that works on 42.14 might break on 42.15. Always check a mod’s Workshop page for the latest compatibility notes before adding it to your server.
How to Check Mod Compatibility
Before installing anything, you need to know whether a mod actually supports Build 42 multiplayer. Here’s how to check:
On the Steam Workshop page, look for these signals:
- The mod title or description explicitly mentions B42, Build 42, or a specific version like 42.14
- The “Updated” date is recent (within the last few weeks is ideal, given how often B42 patches)
- Comments from other players confirming it works in multiplayer, not just singleplayer
- Tags or collections that reference Build 42
Red flags that a mod is not B42-ready:
- The last update was before December 2024 (when B42 unstable launched)
- The description only mentions Build 41
- Comments are full of crash reports or “doesn’t work on B42” complaints
- The author has posted that B42 support is planned but not released
When in doubt, subscribe to the mod locally and test it in singleplayer before pushing it to your server. One broken mod can prevent the entire server from starting.
How to Install Mods on a Project Zomboid Server
Project Zomboid uses Steam Workshop for mod distribution. On a dedicated server, you configure mods through the server’s .ini file rather than subscribing through the Steam client.
Step 1: Find the Workshop ID and Mod ID
Every Workshop mod has two identifiers you need:
- Workshop ID - the number in the mod’s Steam Workshop URL (e.g.,
steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2875848298) - Mod ID - the mod’s internal name, usually listed at the bottom of the Workshop page description
Step 2: Edit the Server Config
Open your server’s .ini file (located at /Zomboid/Server/<servername>.ini on WinterNode) and find these two lines:
WorkshopItems=
Mods=Add Workshop IDs to the WorkshopItems= line, separated by semicolons:
WorkshopItems=2875848298;3490188370;3402493701Add Mod IDs to the Mods= line, also separated by semicolons. Build 42 requires a backslash before each Mod ID:
Mods=\CommonSense;\ProjectCook;\AutotsarTrailersWarning
The backslash prefix is new in Build 42 and is the single most common reason mods fail to load. If you’re coming from Build 41, your old format (without backslashes) will not work. Every Mod ID needs the backslash.
Step 3: Restart the Server
Save the config and restart your server. The server will download the Workshop items automatically on startup. Check the server console for any errors related to mod loading.
If you’re running your server on WinterNode, you can edit the .ini file through the File Manager in the game panel. Need to switch to Build 42 first? Our beta branches guide walks through the process.
Quality of Life Mods
These mods smooth out rough edges without changing the core survival experience. They’re lightweight, well-maintained, and safe to run on any server.
Common Sense
Adds practical interactions that feel like they should already be in the game - prying doors open with a crowbar, crafting spears from brooms, opening cans with knives. Small changes that add up to a more logical experience.
- Workshop ID: 2875848298
- B42 Status: Updated and working
- Server requirement: Both server and client
Project Cook
Replaces the somewhat clunky vanilla cooking interface with a dedicated cooking panel. Browse ingredients, check nutrition info, and manage recipes through a clean UI. Especially helpful for new players learning Build 42’s overhauled crafting system.
- Workshop ID: 3490188370
- B42 Status: Updated through 42.15
- Server requirement: Both (requires NeatUI Framework loaded before it)
- Dependency: NeatUI Framework [B42]
Manage Containers
Streamlines inventory management across containers. When you’re sorting loot across dozens of crates in your base, this saves real time.
- Workshop ID: 2650547917
- B42 Status: Updated for B42
- Server requirement: Both server and client
Draw On The Map
Adds freehand drawing on the in-game map with customizable line thickness and colors. Useful for marking loot runs, safe zones, danger areas, and base expansion plans. In multiplayer, drawings can be shared between players.
- Workshop ID: 2804531012
- B42 Status: Updated for B42
- Server requirement: Both server and client
Minimap Style Options
Lets you customize the minimap - zoom limits, symbols, terrain imagery, building layers. Build 42 added a minimap by default, but the customization options are limited in vanilla.
- Workshop ID: 3526517370
- B42 Status: Updated for 42.14+ (SP and MP)
- Server requirement: Both server and client
Vehicles and Transportation
Build 42 already improved vehicles significantly over Build 41, but mods push things further with new models, trailers, and physics improvements.
Autotsar Trailers B42
Adds towable trailers for hauling supplies. When you’re doing a big loot run to the warehouse district, having a trailer attached to your pickup makes the trip worthwhile instead of requiring three round trips.
- Workshop ID: 3402493701
- B42 Status: Built for B42
- Server requirement: Both server and client
- Dependency: Tsar’s Common Library B42 (Workshop ID: 3402491515)
ZuperCarts
Introduces pushable carts and trolleys for early-game item transport before you find a working vehicle. Grab a shopping cart from the grocery store and actually use it.
- Workshop ID: 3433203442
- B42 Status: Built for B42
- Server requirement: Both server and client
More Car Features + Spawn Zones Expansion
Adds quality-of-life improvements to vehicles - better spawn zone distribution, rebalanced vehicle conditions, and customizable options. Doesn’t add fantasy vehicles, just makes the existing system more interesting.
- Workshop ID: 3520758551
- B42 Status: Updated for B42
- Server requirement: Both server and client
Info
Filibuster Rhymes’ Used Cars and KI5 vehicle packs, two of the most popular Build 41 vehicle mods, have B42 versions in progress. If you’re looking for a massive vehicle overhaul, check their Workshop pages for the latest status. Both mod authors are active but updates depend on B42 stability.
Base Building and Crafting
Functional Gutters
Build gutter systems connected to rain collectors for better water collection. Build 42’s expanded crafting makes this feel like a natural extension of the base building loop.
- B42 Status: Updated for B42
- Server requirement: Both server and client
Ladders
Lets you climb fixed ladders in the world and craft your own wooden and steel ladders. Useful for base defense, rooftop access, and escaping hordes without relying on sheet rope every time.
- B42 Status: Updated for B42
- Server requirement: Both server and client
Vanilla Foods Expanded
Adds over 1,700 new food items and recipes that match the vanilla art style. Build 42’s crafting overhaul makes cooking a much bigger part of the game, and this mod leans into that.
- Workshop ID: 3577903007
- B42 Status: Updated for B42
- Server requirement: Both server and client
Atmosphere and Immersion
Authentic Z
Overhauls zombie outfit distribution so zombies wear clothing that matches where they spawned. Zombies in a hospital wear scrubs. Zombies in a police station wear uniforms. Over 150 custom outfits across different zones. Small detail, big immersion boost.
- Workshop ID: 2335368829
- B42 Status: Updated for B42
- Server requirement: Both server and client
Thump with Friends
When zombies attack a structure, nearby zombies hear the commotion and join in. Makes barricaded buildings feel like a pressure test instead of a safe haven. A subtle but meaningful change to horde behavior.
- Workshop ID: 3504753006
- B42 Status: Built for B42+
- Server requirement: Both server and client
Immersive Blackouts
Random power and water shutoffs that happen outside the game’s default timeline. Instead of a single predictable shutoff event, utilities flicker on and off unpredictably. Forces you to prepare earlier and more thoroughly.
- Workshop ID: 3607686447
- B42 Status: Built for B42 MP
- Server requirement: Both server and client
Map Expansions
Map mods add new towns, cities, and points of interest to the game world. They’re some of the most popular PZ mods, but B42 compatibility is uneven.
Raven Creek B42
One of the most beloved PZ map mods, now with a dedicated Build 42 version. Adds a large urban area with dense buildings and military zones. A staple for servers that want more city exploration.
- Workshop ID: 3484263516
- B42 Status: Dedicated B42 version available
- Server requirement: Server-side (map data loads automatically)
Warning
Some players have reported interior cell issues with Raven Creek on certain B42 multiplayer patches - interiors registering as outdoors, with no power or plumbing. Test on your specific B42 version before committing to it for your server. This may be resolved in newer patches.
Other map mods like Fort Knox and Grapeseed are in various stages of B42 porting. Check their Workshop pages for the latest. Map mods generally need the most work to port between builds because of terrain and cell system changes.
When adding map mods, add the map folder name to the Map= line in your server config, after the default maps.
Server Administration Mods
Multiplayer Bug Fixes
A community-maintained collection of fixes for known Build 42 multiplayer bugs. The kind of mod that exists because B42 MP is still on the unstable branch and The Indie Stone hasn’t patched everything yet. Worth running on any B42 MP server.
- Workshop ID: 3627047348
- B42 Status: Built for B42 MP
- Server requirement: Server-side
Mod Update and Alert System
Delivers in-game notifications about mod updates to players. Useful for servers running many mods where keeping everyone on the same version matters.
- Workshop ID: 3077900375
- B42 Status: Updated for B42
- Server requirement: Both server and client
Mods to Avoid (As of March 16 2026)
These are popular Build 41 mods that are not yet compatible with Build 42. If you see them recommended in older guides, don’t install them on a B42 server.
| Mod | Status | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Brita’s Weapon Pack | Not B42 compatible | Author has stated B42 update will come when the build is complete. Use GaelGunStore or Ahu’s ToolWeapon pack as alternatives. |
| Expanded Helicopter Events | B41 only | No B42 version released. Ultimate Helicopter Event [B42] is an alternative. |
| Hydrocraft | Not confirmed for B42 MP | Massive content mod that needs significant porting work. |
| Mod Manager: Server | B41 only | The in-game mod management workflow changed in B42. |
Info
The PZ modding community calls major update transitions the “modpocalypse.” It’s normal. Most actively maintained mods get ported within a few months. Abandoned mods stay broken. If your favorite mod isn’t on B42 yet, check whether the author is active before waiting indefinitely.
Performance Considerations
Build 42 already uses more RAM than Build 41, and mods add to that. Here’s what to budget:
Lightweight mods (UI changes, QoL tweaks, cooking/crafting mods): Minimal impact. A dozen of these won’t meaningfully affect server performance.
Medium impact (vehicle packs, food expansions, zombie cosmetics): Each one adds entities or data the server tracks. Budget an extra 1-2GB for a handful of these.
Heavy impact (map expansions, large content overhauls, NPC mods like Bandits): These fundamentally add content the server must simulate. Budget 2-4GB extra per major content mod.
RAM Guidelines for Modded B42 Servers
| Setup | Recommended RAM |
|---|---|
| Vanilla B42, 2-4 players | 8GB |
| Light mods (5-10 QoL), 4-8 players | 12GB |
| Medium mods (15-20 mixed), 8-16 players | 16GB |
| Heavy mods (30+ with maps/vehicles), 10+ players | 20-24GB |
WinterNode’s Project Zomboid hosting starts at $1.99/GB with no CPU limits or storage caps, so you can scale your RAM to match your mod list without worrying about hidden charges. Get your Project Zomboid server →
Tip
If you’re uploading a large modpack or custom map files manually, use SFTP instead of the File Manager. SFTP handles large transfers much more reliably. Your SFTP credentials are in the game panel under Settings.
Tips for Running a Modded B42 Server
Start small. Add 3-5 mods, test stability, then expand. Debugging one broken mod in a list of 30 is painful.
Pin your Build 42 version. When a new B42 patch drops, don’t update immediately. Wait a few days for mod authors to catch up. Your server runs fine on the previous version in the meantime.
Keep a mod changelog. Track which mods you added and when. When something breaks after an update, this tells you what changed. A simple text file in your server directory works.
Watch the server console. Mod loading errors show up in the console output. If a mod fails to load, you’ll see it there before players start reporting problems.
Communicate mod requirements to players. Most gameplay mods need client-side installation too. Share your mod list as a Workshop collection so players can subscribe to everything in one click rather than hunting down individual mods.

Frequently Asked Questions
No. Build 42 overhauled the modding framework, and Build 41 mods are not compatible. Mod authors need to port their mods to B42 specifically. Always check the mod's Workshop page for a B42 version before subscribing.
Add the Workshop IDs to the WorkshopItems= line and the Mod IDs to the Mods= line in your server's .ini file, separated by semicolons. In Build 42, each Mod ID needs a backslash prefix. Restart the server to download and load the mods.
Build 42 is more RAM-hungry than Build 41. Plan for at least 8GB for a lightly modded server with a few players. 12-16GB is a safer baseline for 10+ mods. Heavily modded servers with map expansions and vehicle packs may need 16-24GB.
It depends on the mod. Some are server-side only, meaning players connect normally. Most gameplay mods require both server and client installation. Each mod's Workshop page specifies the requirement.
The most common cause is the Mod ID format change. Build 42 requires a backslash before each Mod ID in the server config. The format is \Mod1;\Mod2;\Mod3 instead of the old Mod1;Mod2;Mod3 format from Build 41.
