Convert a Minecraft world between Vanilla, Paper, and Spigot without losing the Nether, the End, or world settings.

Paths below assume level-name in server.properties is world. If yours is different, use that name instead.

Where each server stores dimensions

Server software26.1 and newerBefore 26.1
Vanilla, Fabric, Forge, NeoForgeAll in world/dimensions/minecraft/Nether in world/DIM-1, End in world/DIM1
Paper and Paper forksAll in world/dimensions/minecraft/Nether in world_nether/DIM-1, End in world_the_end/DIM1
Spigot and CraftBukkitNether in world_nether/dimensions/minecraft/the_nether, End in world_the_end/dimensions/minecraft/the_endNether in world_nether/DIM-1, End in world_the_end/DIM1

Switching to Paper or Spigot

Paper and Spigot convert the world for you on first start.

  1. If you are moving to Spigot, rename any existing world_nether and world_the_end folders so Spigot creates fresh ones
  2. In the sidebar, open Advanced > Server Actions and install the new software without wiping server files
  3. Click Start and let the first startup finish in Console without interrupting it

Paper does not support converting a Paper world to Spigot. Stay on Paper or restore your backup instead.

Switching from Paper to Vanilla, Fabric, Forge, or NeoForge

26.1 and newer

  1. In File Manager, open world/dimensions/minecraft/overworld/data/minecraft
  2. Move game_rules.dat, scheduled_events.dat, wandering_trader.dat, weather.dat, and world_gen_settings.dat into world/data/minecraft (create the folder if needed)
  3. Install the new software without wiping server files, then click Start

Skipping step 2 resets game rules, weather, and similar settings.

Before 26.1

  1. Move world_nether/DIM-1 into world, and world_the_end/DIM1 into world
  2. Install the new software without wiping server files, then click Start

If Vanilla already created its own world/DIM-1 or world/DIM1, rename those first.

Switching from Spigot to Vanilla, Fabric, Forge, or NeoForge

On 26.1 and newer, switch to Paper first, start it once, then follow the Paper 26.1 steps. Before 26.1, follow the Paper before 26.1 steps, since the layouts are the same.
